What is a DUNS Number?

Also known as: Data Universal Numbering System

By the GovPrimer teamUpdated January 1, 2026

The DUNS number was a nine-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet that the federal government formerly used to identify contractors. It was retired for federal awards in April 2022 and replaced by the SAM.gov-assigned Unique Entity ID (UEI).

What changed

Until 2022, contractors needed a DUNS number from a third party (Dun & Bradstreet) to register in SAM.gov. The government moved entity identification in-house with the UEI, which is now generated directly in SAM.gov at no cost.

Older records and historical award data may still reference DUNS numbers, but new registrations and awards use the UEI.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a DUNS number for government contracts?

No. The DUNS number is no longer used for federal registration or awards. You now use the Unique Entity ID (UEI) obtained through SAM.gov.
